Dog Father vs. Galvanized nail... OOps... (PICS!)
      #39577 - Sat Apr 07 2007 09:21 PM

Well, had to go to the dump to throw some stuff out, so of course the DF came along for the ride. While I was there I found a wood platform someone threw out. Great! A target! Did some messing about, the DF really digs in, even on light throws! Got boring, so I started hacking away at the junk wood. You know how it is, when in doubt, chop!

I was happily chopping away when I heard the dreaded "CLANG" of metal on metal! I just about wet myself.

I immediately inspected the blade and noticed what looked like a chunk of metal on one side. BAD right? I took a closer look, and it was about 25% of the head off of a galvanized nail that stuck to the blade! It wiped off and the resulting marks on the blade are a VERY tiny nick in the blade and a "smear" on one side. The DF actually cut through the head of the nail!

The damage is extremely minor & I suspect it will be able ~45 or 50 seconds to fix. The camera is charging so photos will follow. I was shocked at how well the DF fared. I was NOT pulling my swings. It had every ounce of my 235 pound frame behind it. It was a full on overhand chop that clipped the nail. I have seen more damage on other blades from knots in a log!

Dan - Consider yourself warned! The next time the DFs go on sale I will be buying at least one more. I am absolutely shocked at how tough this blade is. It almost defies logic!

to the Yard!

Oh, and the board was made to pay. It suffered severe trauma. Did you know a DF can split a 3' 2x6 in a single swing? And now you know! Yeah, I am just abotu giddy at how well this things handles.

With testers like you, Cold One, we don't need the ones on "other" forums!

Well CO, I think you hit the nail on the head!

Looking forward to the pics! I think they'll be making tanks out of SR-77 soon.

Got them downloaded now, just need to do some cropping and resizing.

One thing I noticed is that there is no metal loss on the DF. It is a VERY small edge roll. I steeled it and it is back in line, not as sharp as before but still there!

Cool pics and story! It is really cool what the Ohio crew is putting out in terms of $$$ spent and the return gained

The cost/performance ratio is insane here. I still can't get over how well the blade dealt with the strike! Who would believe a knife capable of that!

That is very impressive for a knife that hit a nail.

i've seen images of rangers after performing the same task and they looked intact as well. now we've gotta try it with some other knives and see who can handle it and who can't. cliff has plenty of such tests too. beckers, chris reeves, and striders. i think they all took damage. probably others.

Sorry, I don't see myself doing this intentionally without sponsorship!

I have no problem using a knife hard, but purposely shopping nails strikes me as abuse!

That is true, CO, but it is nice to know how strong these blades are. I accidentally chopped a nail with one of my CS kukris in Carbon V. The damage was slightly more. I guess SR77 is even tougher than Carbon V, which is quite tough.

Sweeeeeeet!!!!!!! I love knowing my S6 can take that kind of abuse if necessary. There's a comfort there that you can find with few knives.

Good closeups bro. I tried to take a picture of my "knick" which was a little smaller than that and had no luck!
